Te Aponga Uira is proud to light up Rarotonga for Te Maeva Nui 2025, celebrating 60 years of self-governance in free association with New Zealand.
Our team has been working behind the scenes for weeks, checking and preparing coloured lights around the island, from Tupapa and Avarua to Muri, Vaimaanga, and Arorangi. These festive lights are part of our long-standing community initiatives.
We’ve proudly supported Te Maeva Nui and national significant celebrations with our colourful displays for over 10 years, and during the 50th anniversary, we expanded the lights beyond Avarua to brighten more of the island. Now, as we mark this diamond jubilee, we continue to honour the national theme:
“You have flourished my Nation, and created a firm foundation for me and future generations.”
All coloured lights will be switched on from tomorrow evening for approximately two weeks, helping set the stage for this milestone celebration.
Te Aponga Uira’s commitment to Rarotonga doesn’t pause during the festivities. Our crew continues to generate and distribute power reliably across the island, with staff on standby to respond to any faults that may occur, day or night.
“We want our customers to enjoy this milestone celebration with peace of mind, knowing our team is here to ensure your electricity stays on,” said Lesley Katoa, Chief Executive Officer. “Please remember to drive carefully when out enjoying the lights, especially near our roadside decorations and power poles.”
“On behalf of all of us at Te Aponga Uira, we wish our customers, community and Pa Enua family, from the North to the South, a safe, joyful, and memorable Te Maeva Nui. Enjoy the celebrations, and the lights we proudly connect each year to mark this special occasion.”
