Te Aponga Uira visits Northpower on a technical exchange
Some of Te Aponga Uira’s team recently completed a two-day technical exchange with Northpower in New Zealand, strengthening collaboration between our organisations and providing valuable insights for future infrastructure projects in the Cook Islands. Northpower is a New Zealand-owned electricity distribution and contracting company, primarily serving the Northern districts.
The main focus of the visit was to observe Northpower’s 33kV cable installation and jointing works, giving our team first-hand experience that will directly support an upcoming project in Rarotonga. This practical exposure expanded our technical knowledge and reinforced the partnership we are building across the Pacific.
Learning in action
The programme began at Northpower’s Auckland depot, where our delegation was warmly welcomed. Over the two days, our team engaged in a variety of activities to strengthen technical expertise and organisational connections, including:
Building capacity for the Cook Islands
This exchange was more than just a technical showcase. It was an opportunity to deepen relationships and strengthen our organisation’s ability to deliver reliable, modern infrastructure for the Cook Islands. The expertise and experience shared will be instrumental as we move forward with critical projects.
Looking ahead, the exchange has also opened the door for future technical attachments and development opportunities for TAU. By creating pathways for ongoing knowledge transfer, mentorship, and skill-building placements, we can further build capacity within our workforce and ensure long-term benefits from these partnerships.
We are grateful to all Northpower staff who contributed their time and expertise, particularly to Tracey McCarthy – Major Projects Coordinator for coordinating an excellent programme.
This visit reflects TAU’s commitment to partnership, innovation, and resilience, ensuring we continue to provide the Cook Islands with reliable and sustainable electricity.
